Sapper Herbert Arthur Haycock

Died 28th April 1952 Aged 24 Years

Arthur was the second youngest of five Haycock children. He moved with his family to Longnor in 1933 when he was five. It seems he had an idyllic childhood, playing in the fields and streams around the village.

After school, and a spell working on the railways, Arthur joined the Royal Engineers (10th Railway Regiment), and was sent to Egypt to keep trains operating that were supplying the British army. It was stressful and dangerous work as the local population were hostile, and attacked the Sappers while sabotaging their efforts. Just weeks before Arthur was due home, the Haycocks received the heart-breaking news that he’d died. Arthur’s gravestone is amongst many others in the Moascar Military Cemetery in Egypt.
