All dressed up for Opening Day – September 1965

It took 12 years and a lot of fundraising effort to raise enough money to build Longnor VIllage Hall.

Fundraisng began in 1953, with Mrs Corbett as the Chair of the Committee to begin with, then Mr N Dunn from 1955.

The Committee raised £1600 through fetes, whist drives, bingo sessions and dances. This was match-funded by the Ministry of Education, bringing the total to over £3000. Mr W Morris did the building work.

The hall was officially opened on Saturday 18 September 1965 with the cutting of tape and a party involving children’s games and a ‘social’. A group of women from Leebotwood did the catering to give the ladies of Longnor a well-earned rest.

For 59 years the hall has hosted parties, christenings, weddings and funerals, meetings, talks and social events.

For nearly 60 years, very many people have been involved in running the hall and making sure it’s maintained.

Currently Clive and Sandra Hasted do a great job of taking bookings and maintaining the general running of the hall. The committee organises monthly social events to fund the day-to-day running costs.

Various improvements have been made over the years, including the recent insulation of the roof, and refurbishment of the floor.

We plan to continue this progress by replacing some of the windows, starting with those in the gents loo and Vineyard Room which are in the most needy state.
